If you have scheduled an elective surgery for any number of reasons, your surgeon will typically require you to have a pre-operative clearance appointment with your medical provider to “clear” you for surgery. A pre-op clearance is a standard procedure that will ensure that you are ready for your surgery and assess any potential risks for surgery. Depending on the type of surgery you are having, your surgeon may have specific things they want examined but the pre-op clearance exam will typically look at your overall health and wellness.

During your pre-op clearance appointment your medical provider will assess your health status, determine any potential risk factors, educate you about what to expect before, during, and after surgery, document your medical condition or reason for your surgery and ultimately provide you with documentation for your surgeon. What will be assessed during your evaluation may vary depending on your age, gender, and general health. If there is lab work needed, this will also be conducted during your pre-op clearance. Your pre-op clearance appointment will always help reduce any potential risks and optimize your surgical results while protecting your overall health.

What to Expect During Your Pre-Op Clearance?

  • Physical Assessment (weight, height)
  • A Discussion of What to Expect From the Surgical Procedure
  • A Discussion of Risk Factors
  • An Examination of Overall Health (heart, lungs, blood pressure, etc.)
  • Lab Work (blood work, urine sample, etc.)
  • Depending on Health or Risk Factors: X-Ray or EKG
  • A Discussion of Medications to Take and How to Take Them Before and After Surgery
